Intro to Outdoor Climbing -C101-

Syllabus

This clinic is intended to provide students with the foundational skills of outdoor rock climbing. Modules include skill theory lessons, skill practice sessions and rock climbing time to allow safe, sufficient and varied practice.  


 Skills reviewed during this course:  

  • Properly use and maintenance of climbing gear 
  • Tying in using a figure-eight knot
  • Top rope belaying using a tubular belay device and/or an assisted belay device
  • Safety checks and basic climbing commands
  • The risks of outdoor vs gym climbing
  • Leave No Trace principles and good climbing etiquette

Smith Rock State Park

Located in Central Oregon (30 min from Bend and 2.5 hrs from Portland), Smith Rock is known worldwide as the birthplace of sport climbing.

Horsethief Butte

Located in the Columbia River George (Washington side), Tamani Pesh-Wa (or written on the rock) is a Canyon full of history. A great place for teaching and a beautiful setting (20 min from Hood River and 1.5 hrs from Portland).
