Lead Climbing & Sport Anchors -C201-

Syllabus

This course focuses on the technical skills needed to lead routes and protect your partners in an outdoor rock climbing environment. During this clinic, students will be able to mock-lead climbs to practice clipping and rope management with the added security of a top rope. 


Additionally, the scope of this course includes sport climbing anchors and cleaning techniques to provide a good foundation for everybody who wants to become a solid leader. 


  Skills reviewed during this course: 

  • Lead belaying using a tubular device (i.e. ATC) and an assisted breaking device (i.e. Grigri)
  • Gear selection and racking up 
  • Clipping gear safely and adequately to minimize rope drag and protect the follower
  • Top rope anchors
  • Top belaying for multi-pitch climbing
  • Safely cleaning anchors

Smith Rock State Park

 Located in Central Oregon (30 min from Bend and 2.5 hrs from Portland), Smith Rock is known worldwide as the birthplace of sport climbing. 

Horsethief Butte

 Located in the Columbia River George (Washington side), Tamani Pesh-Wa (or written on the rock) is a Canyon full of history. A great place for teaching and a beautiful setting (20 min from Hood River and 1.5 hrs from Portland).
